The Bet: #20kgsIn6mths

Twice every year i make weight loss resolutions.
The first resolve happens on 1 January - to achieve some health goal till my birthday... And my second one is post birthday goal - to become healthy and better by end of the year.
Yup, that's the fattest pose.

This has been going on for many many many years. I have said "I want to break the cycle" many times. This has become a joke... I mean i have managed to kick some deadly habits, i have stayed *clean* for years, i have even exercised for 3 months regularly. So why is it that i am unable to stick to a program and lose some fat.

I am putting a wager on my performance. In the next 6 months (1 July to 31 December), i am going to lose 20 kilos. Achievable? What do you think?

Since i have failed miserably each time i have started a weight loss initiative, I am offering 1:2 odds. You can bet up to Rs 1000 on me.

Say, you bet Rs 1000/- that i WONT hit my target:
If i DONT - i donate Rs 2000/- to charity.
If i DO - i take your Rs 1000/- and donate it to charity.
Frontal isn't looking that bad...

I will donate my winnings or losses in half and half to http://www.secmol.org and http://www.akshayapatra.org which are two NGOs in India.

You can commit the amount on this post, or on FB update or via Twitter. You can also join me on this challenge and choose to be healthy. Use #20kgsIn6mths

You can also support me by not asking me out for drinks or / and dinner from Saturday to Thursday (Friday is the cheat day). When i am going to order samosas and cheese dabeli, ask me to get fruit. You know, be the supportive person...

Lets see if i see this thru with money at stake.

Progress Report

Well, there is good news and bad news. Or there is just news. We see it, colour it, judge it.

I have been hitting the gym regularly from 20 November. There were max 3 days when i didn't work out. The investment has paid off in the first installment of my monthly check up. The results are promising and that is a strong incentive to continue this program. Right now, i have signed up for 3 month course, and without making much change around the way i function, i have got desirable result.

In fact, i have not changed my lifestyle at all. I was having fun at NH7 - drinking high calorie stuff, eating junk food and devouring special flavoured ice-creams. I have been working late nights, eating at odd times, eating all sorts of things ranging from biriyanis to cheesy omelettes to pizza and chinese takeaway.

The only key change i have done is, sweating it out in the gym for one hour every single day.

Of course, the trainer has given me a scolding for not eating enough protein. Well, i guess that's the next logical step. In the next two months, i will replace junk snacking with pulses, eggs, chicken, curd, fish and other protein foods.

Well, till next post then!!

Interconnectivity

I put on 20 kilos in so many months since July 2007. The max i weighed was 110 kg and trust me, i didn't feel it rising. Things got out of hand in 2010 - sleepless nights, snoring, irritability, dissatisfaction at work - and one thing led to another. Poor results despite religiously working out, various healthy eating habits, multiple therapies, acted as a wet blanket in all my attempts to shed those kilos and go back to my ideal weight and size.

Suddenly, I discovered Hypothyroidism by serendipity. It was a magical month! I thought taking a pill every morning was going to solve all my health problems. Well, no such luck...

In those dark years i met many wonderful people who have a holistic view to life and healing. I did not know that body has memory. I did not know that if your body thinks it is dying, it stores weight. I did not know that snoring is an indication of a larger problem. In some very interesting sessions with alternate healers, i discovered that losing weight has lots to do with who you are, than what you do.

There were reasons beyond the obvious - and i choose to go after resolving it, instead of seeking 'why'.

I dropped the 10 kgs and came down to 100 kgs and have stayed constant for a very long time... about 2 years. Nothing happened, because i did nothing.

A point has come, where lot of things are closing in to some kind of finale. All things coming together to help me get out this limbo.

More on that - soon...

Body composition

Gyms nowadays come with state-of-the-art equipment and machinery. They have this very interesting device, a platform where you feed your age and height - and on which you stand till the counter stops. It provides a detailed analysis of your internal health.
Here is mine.

Weight: 101.4 kg
Muscle mass: 63.5%
Metabolic age: 50
Fat: 34%
Visceral fat: 17%
Calcium: 3%
Water: 48.3%

Fitness score: 3/10

Well, now that i know what is going on internally it gives a better perspective to the health routine.

One never knows where inspiration comes from. The trick is to keep finding inspiration for the next 40 years.

Last Minute Resolution Check

And as yet another deadline looms large over my 2014 resolution, i am moving my ass today. Each year on 1 January, i decide to lose weight till my birthday. And each year on 31 May, i decide to do something about it by end of the year. Three of the four things i set out to do in this year, i have managed to roll. The health goal however, i have not been able to do much about.

Well, taking it one day at a time with less than 45 days left for the year to get over, i am starting today. It apparently is the International Men's Day, and my manly stats are here:
  • Weight: 101.5kg
  • Neck: 16''
  • Chest: 43''
  • Biceps: 12''
  • Waist: 49''
  • Stomach: 45''
  • Thighs: 24''
  • Calves: 14''

The internals don't look too bad either...

  • Cholesterol: 168.9
  • Triglycerides: 171.6 (needs to be under 150)
  • HDL Cholesterol: 31.4 (needs to be above 60)
  • LDL Cholesterol: 103.2 (needs to be under 100)

and many more indicators show i am borderline... The objective is to be in the normal range.

I am joining a gym today, and will be posting results every 7 days, with the work out regime i follow. Diet is going to see-food, except i wont be eating post 7.30pm. And i will drink only on 3 occasions till end of the year.

Lets see how 2014 ends!!
